Nectar Robbing

I've been noticing some thieves in my yard!  Not really, but it's neat to notice how different critters adapt with the actions they take on.  I've noticed lately on my Mexican Petunia/Ruellia that the Carpenter Bees and Bumblebees take to retrieving the nectar from each flower by walking down the bloom to the base and piercing the bloom to get to the nectar that way.

Apparently any of these pollinators that don't have the ability to reach nectar in tight bloom bottoms use this method to get to the pollen.  The next one can come along and use the same hole that is pierced.  When the Ruellia blooms are completely open, they go in the front door, but as soon as the sun isn't hitting them, they withdraw.  It's said that this action really isn't a concern because there are plenty of other insects that easily go into the bloom from the front and complete plenty of pollination.  I guess we can let these bandits go about their business.
