I've been lucky enough to have several woodpeckers in my backyard. The thing about photographing woodpeckers is you pretty much just have to wait until they want to be photographed. More than half the time, they are on the other side of a trunk, in the shadows, or they just won't be still. The photos you see below represent many, many bad photos! Haha. So far I've seen Downy Woodpeckers, Red-Bellied Woodpeckers, Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker Woodpeckers, and a Red-Headed Woodpecker.
It's always a surprise and I get excited when a woodpecker shows up within photographing range. I see most of my woodpecker activity in the cold months and Spring when they are really going after the suet and peanuts.
