I had the urge to build another Mason Bee house since all of mine have gotten away from me or are for sale on Etsy. Had to have one to myself! Hopefully some Mason bees will make use of it this season. It'll all be a learning experience in this first year of having them.
This particular Mason Bee started out like the others with three pieces of 2x4 and the spaced out holes. But I remembered reading somewhere that Mason Bees are really happy when they are around water and dirt or mud. The two things they need when creating their egg chambers. So I thought why not put a small cup on the top and keep water or dirt in it. I have a garden fountain pretty close so water is readily available. I'll probably keep water in it. I'm sure a Mason Bee would prefer to grab mud directly and I can't keep dirt moist forever up there. Anyway, I'm babbling. Here are a couple of pics. There are more in the PHOTO GALLERY.
Parts: 2x4 pieces, (2) vintage motorcycle license plates, a silverplate tray (cut), a silverplate condiment cup(?), copper came rods, brass banding and one little honey bee push pin.
